And don't even get me started on whether eggs will save you or kill you! You’ve had every imaginable test and seen every imaginable doctor yet have seen no improvement. You’ve gotten conflicting advice, but none of it works. You’re tired, literally and physically. Tired of not finding relief for your symptoms.
With health information coming at us from every direction, how do we figure out what's actually good for our bodies? The amount of conflicting health advice out there makes it feel almost impossible to navigate through the mess.
As someone who's spent countless hours tumbling down health advice rabbit holes (and occasionally emerging more confused than when I started), I've learned a few things about cutting through the noise. This is what turned me onto functional labs and how integrating them into your wellness journey can be exceptionally valuable in getting you the answers you need.
Here are ten practical tips I’ve learned through my years as a coach and wellness advisor, which will help you navigate the often contradictory world of health advice without losing your mind.

Not all health advice is created equal. That Instagram influencer might look amazing in workout gear, but do they have any actual qualifications in nutrition or exercise science? Before taking advice to heart, check who's giving it.
Peer-reviewed medical journals, reputable health organizations, licensed healthcare professionals, and qualified functional medicine practitioners should carry more weight than celebrity endorsements or viral social media posts.
2. Look for Consensus, Not Outliers
When it seems like every expert has a different opinion, zoom out and look at the bigger picture. What do most credible sources agree on? While there will always be contrarians with flashy new theories, consensus views in medicine usually develop for good reason.
Functional medicine often bridges traditional and alternative approaches by acknowledging areas where consensus exists (like the importance of nutrition and lifestyle) while exploring individualized factors that conventional medicine might overlook.
3. Check the Quality of the Study
Not all studies are created equal either. A headline claiming, "Coffee Linked to Longer Life!" might be based on a tiny study with 15 participants or a massive analysis of hundreds of thousands of people followed for decades.
Functional medicine places strong emphasis on evidence-based approaches while recognizing that emerging research may offer valuable insights before it reaches mainstream consensus. The best practitioners will be transparent about when they're working from robust evidence versus promising but preliminary findings.
4. Watch for Conflicts of Interest
Always follow the money. Is the "groundbreaking research" on a supplement funded by the company that makes it? Is the doctor promoting a diet plan also selling meal delivery services or books based on that approach?
This doesn't automatically invalidate the information, but it should raise your skepticism level. Independent research with no financial ties to the outcomes tends to be more reliable.
5. Recognize That Your Personal Situation Matters
Here's something that gets lost in most health debates: we're all different! Your age, genetics, medical history, current health status, and even cultural background all influence what health approaches will work best for you.
What works wonderfully for your gym-obsessed colleague might be inappropriate or even dangerous for you. This is why personalized advice from healthcare providers who know your situation is so valuable, and why it’s vital that you make them aware of your specific lifestyle and environment. The more information they have to work with to assess your individual needs, the better their advice and guidance will be.
6. Beware the Halo Effect
We humans love simple narratives. If something is "good," we want it to be good in every way. This leads to things like coconut oil or turmeric being promoted as cure-alls, when the reality is more nuanced.
Most health interventions have both benefits and drawbacks, appropriate contexts and inappropriate ones. Be suspicious of any health advice that presents something as a miracle with no downsides.
7. Remember That Headlines Oversimplify
Media outlets need clicks, and nuanced health information rarely makes for viral content. That's why we get whiplash-inducing headlines that seem to contradict each other from week to week.
Functional medicine often requires longer appointments and detailed assessments specifically because health is too complex to reduce to headlines. The body doesn’t exist in a silo – neither should your healthcare advice.

Some people’s bodies simply don’t tolerate what other bodies find helpful. Some are more sensitive in general. Some may have tolerated things in the past, but due to any number of factors, no longer do. All of this factors into how your body is feeling and operating today, and today is what matters.
Keep a journal tracking how different foods, activities, or habits affect your energy, mood, sleep, and overall wellbeing. This personal evidence can help you identify what works specifically for you.
Functional medicine testing is also incredibly useful here, as it can indicate what foods or toxins may be wreaking havoc on your body without your knowledge.
10. Find Healthcare Providers Who Listen
Perhaps the most powerful tool in navigating any confusion surrounding health advice is building relationships with healthcare providers who respect both scientific evidence and your personal experiences.
A good provider will help you interpret contradictory information in the context of your specific health needs, listen to your concerns, and partner with you to make decisions that align with both current medical understanding and your personal values.
The bottom line? In a world of conflicting health advice, approach information with healthy skepticism, focus on the fundamentals most experts agree on, personalize based on your unique circumstances, and remember that health is a journey, not a destination. What works best for you may evolve over time, and that's completely normal.
