Finally, A Sustainable Hormone Balancing Approach -- that Actually Works & Isn’t Overwhelming

If you’re anything like most of the women I work with, your hormones can make you feel a little crazy – like an invader has taken over your body and mind. Do you have extra weight around your mid-section that just won’t budge, inconsistent sleep, heavy periods, headaches, low libido, PMS, a general feeling of being exhausted and moody?

Maybe you’ve already tried a variety of diets and pills… only to be left feeling extremely exhausted, bloated and more annoyed than ever. It can be so frustrating to intuitively know that something is “not quite right” in your body, while your doctor is telling you that “your tests say you’re fine”. I get it. I’ve been there too. Maybe you’ve been torturing yourself with the “eat less and exercise more” protocol that many of your friends are trying. And nothing is working and you’ve had it!

That’s where I come in. I’m Kate Motz, a Functional Medicine Health Coach, and it’s my passion to help women with overcoming hormonal imbalances. Read on and I’ll show you exactly what to do (and what not do) to finally start feeling like yourself again. Working with many women like you, I’ve identified what works and what doesn’t work when it comes to getting to the root cause of hormone imbalances.

The first thing we need to do is understand what is actually happening with your hormones…

Here Are Four Strategies That Don’t Work – Yet Many Women Try Them Anyway:

1. Hormonal Birth Control (ie: The Pill): 

Today, many women use hormonal birth control for many reasons. But the truth is it was created for one reason… to prevent pregnancy. It wasn’t created so that you could have more regular periods, less PMS, or clearer skin. The Pill and other forms of hormonal birth control are effective in preventing pregnancy. However, they are not proven safe, effective, or helpful as a sustainable strategy for hormone imbalance issues.

But many MD’s, OBGYN’s and dermatologists in the last 25 years, have started prescribing them to women like you, for the wrong reasons. Women who are exhausted, frustrated, and struggling with their hormones and health. It seems simple and easy and bonus, you don’t get pregnant.

Except it’s not.

The truth is… these options don’t actually “treat” your problems, they are a temporary cover-up, masking the issues. They simply hide your symptoms by introducing synthetic hormones that alter the function of your REAL hormones.

Did you know hormone containing contraception can mask serious health issues like ovarian cysts, PCOS, and endometriosis? In some cases, using it can even magnify the existing hormone imbalances or problems and cause those annoying symptoms to become worse.

Maybe you’ve experienced some of the side effects; breast tenderness, headaches, nausea, weight gain, or spotting. But what about the super scary side effects of hormonal birth control, like increased cancer risk, serious digestive disorders, blood clots and fertility issues?

Here’s the deal…if you must, use birth control to prevent yourself from getting pregnant. Any other use is putting yourself, your family, and any future wanted pregnancies in jeopardy.

2. Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT): 

You may have seen ads or pictures about how HRT will make your life blissful… like you’re always on a perfect vacation. But what is actually happening, when the hormones are prescribed and taken to replace the ones your body no longer makes, is that the body will be tricked into thinking that the natural hormone production is “back on track”. And this can cause more chaos than calm. When the body either isn’t making enough or is no longer making it at all, sometimes HRT is used to treat common symptoms, including hot flashes, acne, irregular periods and vaginal dryness. HRT prescriptions have been fairly routine for treating such symptoms. If you’ve have had some of these issues, due to changing hormones, you may have felt like the only solution was to start popping pills and slathering on creams, to manage the chaos.

The use of HRT (AKA: synthetic or bioidentical hormones) to help deal with hormone imbalance is very controversial and studies show mixed results as to the safety and efficacy. Large clinical trials have shown some serious health risks. What does this mean for you?

It means, that if you are on bioidentical or synthetic HRT, you could have an increased risk of strokes and dementia. And if your doctor isn’t prescribing these properly and your estrogen and progesterone levels are out of whack, you have an increased risk of breast cancer, dementia, heart disease and strokes.

So you might “feel” good.

And be dying inside.

Which isn’t a trade-off that you need to be making.

3. Paging ‘Dr. Google’:

It’s normal to google your symptoms or disease. I do it too, but there’s a very dark side to our age of information that can quickly set you on the wrong course for your hormone related issues. You’ve searched the internet for ideas on how to deal with these hormones, and now you’re overwhelmed and confused by all the information and conflicting advice. Did you know that according to a study conducted by The Journal of the American Osteopathic Association (JAOA), Wikipedia has inaccurate information on 10 of the most expensive medical conditions?

Plus, when you Google just about any symptom, there are most likely going to be results that connect the symptom with a form of serious illness or cancer. These extreme conclusions can cause anxiety, especially for people who are already afraid of health problems. This anxiety happens so frequently today, there’s a name for it—cyberchondria.

Your main concern here is that you know there is something “off” and you know you want to figure out how to address it. The question is, where to start?  You already know there are several things to consider: where to find proper guidance, consistent support and effective accountability to ensure that you are on the right path and will get to your goal.

4. Jumping on the diet bandwagon:

Anyone looking to balance hormones has tried a diet (or maybe 5) to help them get their hormones back on track. You’ve seen the big promises with every diet that has come into your social media feed. They guarantee to transform your life, help you lose weight and even balance your hormones. You’re ready to make some changes and tackle these hormone symptoms! So you pick one and dive in before completely understanding how these diets can actually have the opposite and undesired effect.

It’s so frustrating when you have spent the last month sticking to the latest and greatest diet, and you had a little relief, but most of your symptoms are still annoying you. You are missing your favorite foods and don’t know if it was even worth it to stop eating them!  You wonder if relying on a special diet alone will fix your problems. And you think that maybe you don’t have the entire picture of what is causing your hormone symptoms. You are wondering if there may be something else you are overlooking.

Most of the diet plans you’ll find today completely forget to mention the fluctuating female hormone cycle and how food affects it. Also, given the fact that most of us don’t know what our hormonal patterns are and what (if any) imbalances we actually have, we don’t know that the diets we are choosing are not right for us in the first place. The food you eat can be either your best medicine or your most harmful toxin, and should be viewed as something to use wisely to bring you back to an optimal state of health. The question is… are the foods you have chosen to eat bringing health or harm into your life?

Hormone problems are not solved by diet alone.

What’s missing from each of these 4 strategies?

None of them address the REAL cause… the key to balancing hormones is to first identify and address the root causes that are throwing your hormones out of whack.

Yes, you are ready for these annoying symptoms to stop while trying to heal yourself, but if you want to stop the madness for good, you’ll need to do some digging.

Here Are 3 Important Steps You Can Take Now to Start Balancing Your Hormones:

1) Get the right lab work done

Getting the right lab work is one of the most empowering steps you can take on your journey to hormone harmony. Most of the women I work with would have suffered much less had they gotten the right labs done when they started trying to figure out what was up with their hormones. Unfortunately, most women only get the bare minimum lab work done during their annual check-ups. And this is not only a complete disservice, but it doesn’t provide the whole picture when trying to determine what the heck is wrong! These regularly prescribed labs only show a small piece of the puzzle, like whether you have hormone levels that can put you into a category with a disease or diagnosis. The problem is, if your hormone levels don’t fit into the “diagnosis box” that the insurance company has given to the provider, then you are told “your labs are normal and you are fine”… which may not be the case. If you feel like crap and have raging hormone symptoms, it’s not normal and you deserve to know what is going on!

If you’re not working with someone who specializes in functional medicine, take the following list of labs to your provider and ask them to run as many as possible. Just don’t be surprised if they tell you “no”. And don’t worry if they do… I can help! But if they do agree to run the tests, the interpretation of the results is equally, if not more important. Mainstream medical reference ranges can often show that “you’re fine”, but when you are still experiencing symptoms, you are NOT fine and I can help explain what is going on.

2) Do a Hormone Focused Detox.

I’m not talking about only drinking water with lemon and red pepper for a week here. The definition of detox is: a period when you stop taking in unhealthy or harmful foods, drinks, or drugs into your body for a period of time, in order to improve your health. Detoxing for hormone harmony is done by not only cutting out the toxins you are putting in and on your body, but also supporting the body’s own natural process of detoxifying itself.

I take a holistic approach to detoxing with my clients, which may include modifications in diet, lifestyle and supplementation. This is the most effective way I’ve found to reset hormones and ditch annoying symptoms like brain fog, bloating, and period problems.

The Elements of a Proper Hormone Balancing Detox

It’s important to keep in mind that a detox is not just about the food on your plate. The greatest success is achieved when you focus as much energy on your food choices as you do on evaluating the other areas of your life that are not serving you. Detoxing on an emotional level, as well as a physical level, will help you truly begin to thrive again.

When I guide clients through a Hormone Balancing detox, I suggest strategies and provide tools they need to begin a deep, inward journey. They learn skills to utilize during detox and after, to combat any obstacles that may arise and threaten to deter them from creating and sustaining optimal wellness and hormone harmony.

3) Identify and fix the root causes of your hormone imbalance

How can you be confident you are headed in the right direction when you don’t even know why you feel the way you do? The only way to create sustainable change for the better is to identify and remove the things that are causing the problem in the first place. Instead of just covering up symptoms with a temporary fix or a band-aide, figure out the root causes of your hormone chaos and kick them to the curb!

There are 5 root causes that are most likely causing your hormone havoc. You may have one of these, possibly a few… I’ve even worked with some who have had all 5 of them.

The 5 root causes are:

  1. Sneaky Infections: microorganisms, bacteria, yeast and parasites that stress the immune system and the adrenals.
  2. Autoimmunity: could cause leaky gut, increased risk to allergens & sensitivities
  3. Sick Mitochondria: nutrient deficiencies, inflammation, poor sleep, dehydration, lack of movement
  4. Toxic overload: from the environment, body care & household products, pesticides.
  5. Adrenal dysfunction: chronic and unrelenting stress

There are tests and strategies to help you figure out if any of these root causes are an issue for you. Finding out the root causes of your health challenges will put you in the best position to begin to make informed decisions about how give your body the best possible chance to heal.
